Wonwonsa Temple Site

A temple built at the initiative of Kim Yu-shin, the hero of the unification of the three kingdoms.

Wonwonsa Temple, which is said to have been founded by Kim Yu-sin, who played a leading role in the unification of the three kingdoms, is located 11 km south from Mohwa Station to Ulsan from Bulguksa Station on the Donghae Line connecting Busan and Pohang and 3 km to the east at the foot of Bongseo Mountain.

Wongwonsa Temple was founded by Ahn Hye and Nang Yong, disciples of Myeongrang Buddhist monk who founded the Silla Shininjong, along with Kim Shin, Kim Eui-won, and Kim Sul-jong to protect Silla from Tang Dynasty.

Wonwonsa Temple flourished as a secret temple of Shininjong from the Unified Silla Period to the first half of Goryeo, but it was closed in the second half of the Joseon Dynasty. The abandoned pagoda was discovered by Japanese archaeologist Fujiyama Fujisaburo in 1921 and was restored in 1931 to a three-story stone pagoda (Treasure No. 1429) on top of the tower, which was discovered by a group of Nose of Kyoto University.

a three-story stone pagoda

On the hill behind the current Wonwonsa Temple, two three-story stone pagodas stand side by side from east to west, and the base of the pagoda is rarely decorated with bricks carved on the twelve-story statue, and the body of the pagoda is carved with Four Heavenly Kings. This pagoda-style layout appears after Silla unified the three kingdoms, and some say that it was built 100 years after the founding of Wonwonsa Temple, as it was presumed to have been from the end of the 8th to the early 9th century through sculptures of the pagoda.

At that time, the stylobate, Geumdangji, three-story stone pagoda, and stone lanterns remain, and on the left side of Geumdangji, there is a small building built on spring water, with a dragon king drawn inside and the floor of the building is a well. This well is believed to have existed since the Silla period, and it is called Yongdang.
