Yangyang Naksan Temple

Yangyang Naksan Temple

It is one of the eight scenic spots in Kwandong, Gangwon-do.

Hello, if you drive for about 30 minutes along the east coast of Sokcho, Gangwon-do, there is Naksansa Temple, which was founded during the Unified Silla Period, as one of the three major sacred places in Korea. Naksansa Temple in Yangyang was founded in 671 (the 11th year of King Munmu of Silla) and has been repeated several times since it was rebuilt by Buddhist Monk Beomil in 858 (the 2nd year of King Heonan of Silla).

Uisangdae, a fantastic match for the sunrise of the East Sea, Hongryeonam Hermitage, on a high cliff to the north, was built on a coastal stone cave where it is said that Uisang received crystal beads and magic beads from Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. This area is designated as Historic Site No. 495.

In the precincts, there are a seven-story stone pagoda reconstructed during the reign of King Sejo of the Joseon Dynasty, a earthen wall and a Hongyemun Gate surrounding it, and on the hill with a wider East Sea, a 16m high, 3.3m circumference, and 6m wide foundation are enshrined. On the way to Hongryeonam Hermitage from there is Treasure No. 1723, Seawater Gwaneum Public Monument (1692).

In modern times, Naksansa Temple in Yangyang had a painful ordeal. On April 5, 2005, a large forest fire hit Samcheok, Gangneung, and Goseong, Gangwon-do, destroyed several buildings, including the Wontongbojeon Hall of Naksansa Temple, and the same species designated as Treasure No. 479 melted down.
