Gongju National Museum

The National State Museum offers 63 years of experience of ancient art during the reign of Ungjin Baekje.

Hello, Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do, about 140 kilometers from Seoul, is a small city with a population of about 110,000, but it was called Woongjin for 63 years from 475 to 538 during the Baekje period and flourished Baekje culture until it moved to the current Buyeo army.

The National Museum of Korea, which opened on May 14, 2004, houses 30,000 Baekje relics, including the 25th King Muryeong Tomb, which was discovered accidentally during the drainage work of Tomb No. 6 in Songsan-ri in 1971, and 18 national treasures excavated in Chungnam, Daejeon.

The relics are divided into the Muryeong Royal Tomb Room on the first floor, the Chungcheongnam-do Ancient Culture Room on the second floor, and the outdoor exhibition hall, where you can see the history and culture of Chungcheongnam-do from the Won Three Kingdoms to Ungjin and Sabibaekje periods.

The Royal Tomb of King Muryeong on the first floor of the museum exhibits more than 1,000 artifacts, including the gold crown ceremony of the king and queen and stonework, the guardian deity of the royal tomb, among the 4,687 artifacts excavated from the tomb.

Prehistoric culture of Chungcheongnam-do, earthenware and roof tiles from the Baekje period, and standing statues of the Gilt-bronze Gwaneum Bodhisattva (National Treasure No. 128) are on display.

Many stone artifacts excavated from Gongju’s area, including the stone seated Buddha and stone pagoda, are placed in the spacious yard of the museum.

The National Museum of Korea, located about 10 minutes’ walk from the Songsan-ri tomb, where Baekje kings and royal families sleep, conveys the splendid Baekje culture of the 63-year-old Ungjin Baekje period.
