The fortress became the base of Baekje’s revival movement after Baekje’s fall to the combined forces of Nadang
Hello, Seongheungsanseong Fortress (Historic Site No. 4) located in Imcheon-myeon, Buyeo-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, is a typical Pogok-style fortress built around the top of Seongheungsan Mountain at 260m above sea level, and is built with stone on the outside and soil on the inside.
If you park your car in a small vacant lot just below the top of Seongheungsan Mountain and go up to the top of the mountain for about 270m, there is a large zelkova tree that is about 400 years old, and in front of it, there is a large grass square-like vacant lot.
If you walk straight from Buyeo-gun to the top of the flat mountain where you can see the Geumgang River and the Hwangsan Bridge crossing the Geumgang River, there is a small well on the left and General Yoo Geum-pil’s shrine, the founding contributor of the Goryeo Dynasty, on the small hill.
Seongheungsanseong Fortress, which was built in the lower reaches of the Geumgang River to defend Baekje’s Sabido Fortress (now Buyeo) from the enemy, is the only important historical site to know its name at that time because it was built in August (501) by Baega, a high-ranking official. Seongheungsanseong Fortress is also called Garimseong Fortress because it was called Garimgun as a place name during the Baekje period.
The walls built of small square stones of granite are 3 to 4m high, and there are defense facilities such as south, west, and north gateways and military warehouses, three well sites, and earthworks sentries.
