Located about a 5-minute walk from Jagalchi Station on Busan Subway Line 1, one of Busan’s representative tourist destinations, the temporary water memorial hall was relocated to Busan on April 17, 1925, and a two-story wooden Gyeongnam branch office was built in August 1926.
Since then, it has been used as the official residence of the branch of Gyeongsangnam-do until the outbreak of the Korean War (1950-1953), but the South Korean military, which retreated to the Nakdonggang River near Busan, moved the South Korean capital to Busan on August 18 of the same year. An extraordinary government building was established in the Gyeongsangnam-do Office, and the Gyeongsangnam-do Governor’s Office was used as the presidential residence of President Syngman Rhee, the first president of the Republic of Korea.
After the Gyeongsangnam-do Office was relocated to Changwon-si in July 1983, the governor’s office was designated as a temporary capital memorial hall on June 25, 1984, for the preservation of historical facts, unique architectural styles, and exhibits 152 collections of then President Syngman Rhee. It was designated as City Monument No. 53 in May 2002.
