Songsan-ri Ancient Tombs (Rombs of King Muryeong)

Songsan-ri tombs were built in Ungjin (now Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do), which was the capital of Baekje for 64 years until it was moved to Sabi (currently Buyeo-gun, Chungcheongnam-do) in 538.

Hello, there is Songsan-ri Ancient Tombs, the capital of Baekje, which was founded in the era of the Three Kingdoms, in Gongju-si, known as the royal road from Hanseong, Seoul to Ungjin, now Gongju-si, Chungcheongnam-do in 475.

Located on the gentle ridge of Songsan Mountain, 130 meters above sea level, there were originally 17 tombs, but only seven tombs of kings and royals, including the tomb of King Muryeong of Baekje’s 25th King Muryeong, have been restored.

Tombs 1 to 5 are horizontal stone chamber tombs, while Tombs of King Muryeong and Tombs 6 are stone chamber tombs made of tunnel-type bricks influenced by the Southern Dynasties of China. Except for the Tomb of King Muryeong, most of the tombs were stolen and no burial items remained, but 20,906 burial items of 108 kinds, including gold crowns, earrings, bracelets, and necklaces, were discovered and 12 of them were designated as national treasures.

In the ancient tomb, there is Songsan-ri Exhibition Hall, which reproduces and restores the Tomb of King Muryeong, Tomb No. 5, and Tomb No. 6 to its actual size. Tomb No. 6 and Tomb of King Muryeong can be viewed inside, and various burial items, pillows, and costumes that were used at the time are displayed.

Behind the Songsan-ri Exhibition Hall is the actual Tomb of King Muryeong, Tomb No. 5, and Tomb No. 6, and if you cross the ridge where the tomb of King Baekje is located, you will find the remains of Jeongjisan Mountain, Gongju, which is believed to be a ritual facility for the Baekje period.
